The day to day life of those who watch over the respect and dignity of animals

Every day, we have employees who are dedicated to ensuring the welfare of animals within our industrial units. The care goes from the arrival, setting in the catch pen, until the slaughter. We talked with the Animal Welfare Supervisor in Palmeiras de Goiás (GO), Pedro Henrique Gomes Costa, to learn a little about the routine of those who take care of the animals.

Pedro is a veterinary doctor and has been working at the unit for two years. He tells that his routine starts at 5:40 am, when he arrives at the plant and goes straight to the catch pen.

The visit to the catch pen:
“At the catch pen, I evaluate the conditions of the animals, whether physical, environmental, or if they need a specific management. In addition, I check the availability of water, as well as if any structure maintenance is needed on site,” he explains.

The relationship and synergy with the other collaborators are fundamental, according to Pedro. Therefore, good Animal Welfare practices are routinely reinforced with everyone who acts, directly or indirectly, with the animals.

The management in the access ramp to the slaughter:
The routine continues with the check at the access ramp to the slaughter. On the way, it is necessary to evaluate if the handler, the collaborator responsible for leading the animals from the catch pen to slaughter, is doing the work with care and zeal.

“We are always attentive if the removal of the animals is being done according to the guidelines, dividing the lot into small groups. The objective is that they are conducted with tranquility, avoiding falls or slips, ensuring a dignified treatment, according to our good practices,” he reinforces.

The importance of hygiene:
Still on the access ramp, Pedro says he evaluates the animals’ bath. According to him, it is necessary to guarantee what the legislation foresees and, still, our Animal Welfare Policy

“In the animals’ bath, we check the pressure of the shower, for example, because it is necessary to be adequate and comfortable for the animal. We measure the bath time and guarantee the conformity of the water flow. In the end, we evaluated if the bath was effective”, he says.

The care at slaughter:
At the slaughter, Pedro highlights the importance of ensuring that all procedures are performed correctly, following to the letter the Company’s Animal Welfare indicators.

“For example, we have to ensure the stunning efficiency of the animals so that they are completely unconscious and thus continue with the bleeding.”

Safe disembarkation:
The work to ensure the welfare of the animals is also done with their arrival in the unit. Pedro says it is necessary to check the documentation, follow the integrity of the trucks’ structures, verify if the landing procedure is being carried out calmly, without screaming at the animals, or the incorrect use of the electric stick. Another activity is the evaluation of the conditions that the animals arrived and the safe entrance in the catch pen.

Keeping an eye on the production chain:
The routine extends throughout the week with training and administrative work, with the evaluation of indicators of Animal Welfare. It is through them that, according to Pedro, it is possible to identify the need to visit a supplier and closely observe the management on the property.

“With the support of the Cattle Purchase team, we scheduled a visit to the property. Always valuing good relationships, we follow the management and identify opportunities for improvement. Thus, we have already trained the farm’s employees and cleared up any doubts that may arise. Our goal is to ensure the welfare of animals throughout the production chain,” he concludes.

Like Pedro, many other collaborators act to fulfill our Animal Welfare Policy. Each one in their unit, with their own routine, seeks synergy between the areas, taking care of the attention, dignity, and respect for the animals!
