Commitment to
sustainability
We have established short-, medium- and long-term plans, goals and targets for our operations and the value chain. Learn about some of Minerva’s key milestones and progress during the year
goias
`2030 targets
1.
Environmental efficiency in our global operations
Reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity by 30% by 2030;
Consider decarbonization scenarios and future emissions reduction pathways;
Further invest in renewable energy;
Further invest in technologies to increase wastewater treatment efficiency and reduce emissions.
COMPLETED
Maintain net zero emissions in the Company’s electricity mix (scope 2).
2.
Zero illegal deforestation
Implement geospatial monitoring of 100% of direct supplier farms in South America by 2030:
in Colombia by 2023, Uruguay by 2025 and other countries by 2030.
COMPLETED
In Brazil, Minerva is the only company to monitor 100% of its direct supplier farms using georeferenced maps in all biomes in which it operates (Amazon, Cerrado, Pantanal and Atlantic Forest), including all full-cycle farms, from birth to processing. The Company also met its target of monitoring 100% of supplier farms in Paraguay by 2021.
By 2030, develop and implement a program for monitoring indirect supplier farms in all South American countries where the Company operates.
By 2030, develop and launch an application for verifying indirect suppliers in South American countries, in collaboration with Niceplanet Geotecnologia.
COMPLETED
Integrate Visipec—a traceability and monitoring tool for indirect suppliers in the Amazon—into the Company’s internal monitoring systems by 2021.
Develop and launch SMGeo Prospec—an application for verifying indirect suppliers—in Brazil by 2021, in collaboration with Niceplanet Geotecnologia.
3.
Advancing a low-carbon economy
Strengthen partnerships with research institutions;
Expand training and technical assistance in implementing regenerative and low-carbon practices;
Support efforts to rehabilitate native vegetation;
Strengthen partnerships with financial institutions to implement financing facilities that recognize and reward sustainable production practices.
COMPLETED
Implement a method to monitor, report and verify farm properties’ carbon balance (preliminary outcomes).
Learn about the outcomes from these initiatives in the 2021 Sustainability Report.
Sustainable
Beef
We have continued to make strides in traceability and managing and developing our beef suppliers in South America

Renove Program

Created in 2021 to support collaboration with beef suppliers, the Renove program uses internationally recognized technologies and methodologies to measure net carbon emissions from cattle-farming land.

Early results from the initiatives demonstrate that during the agricultural year analyzed, a number of ranches achieved carbon neutrality or even became carbon negative, i.e., they absorb more carbon than they release into the atmosphere in the cattle-farming cycle. Minerva Foods is already selling produce from production systems that are not only low-carbon but are actually carbon-negative, helping combat climate change whilst providing high-quality, safe food products.

Three projects were launched in 2021,

Minerva at COP 26

One of the initiatives in the Renove program, in collaboration with Imaflora, was showcased at COP26 in November 2021, in Glasgow, Scotland. This is the only project in our industry to have its results posted on the Carbon on Track platform, which aims to create transparency around emissions in the beef value chain and recognize organizations spearheading efforts to reduce emissions.

TRACEABILITY FOR DIRECT SUPPLIERS

100% of beef sourced in Brazil and Paraguay is verified using geospatial technology

Minerva Foods is the top performer in social and environmental audits by the Pará Federal Prosecution Service, the most trusted public audit against illegal deforestation in the Amazon

Traceability for Indirect Suppliers

Minerva Foods has integrated into its systems the Visipec traceability and monitoring tool for indirect suppliers in the Amazon.

With the SMGeo Prospec app, launched in 2021, direct suppliers have access to the same technology as used by Minerva Foods to assess their supply chains for compliance.
